The truth about Scholarships

One thing we’re gonna do is tell you the truth or as the kids say, “keep it 100.”

First of all, everyone can and should apply for scholarships. Why pay for school when someone else wants to pay for you? That’s just bad money management.

Scholarships are not just for poor people. We are all poor. REALITY CHECK! The more money you make, the more money you spend. So your ‘poor’ may look different from someone else’s. I was fortunate to grow up with loving parents who wanted the best for me. But love and hope don’t pay for college. I went to a $47,000 a year school and if you know anything about colleges you should know tuition goes up every year.

You can’t just do one scholarship application and throw in the towel when you don’t win. You’ve quit before you’ve even started. Between my junior and senior years of high school, I applied for 80 scholarships and guess how many I won? 11. Yes that right, I won 11 out of 80! It doesn’t take a mathematician to tell you that’s not great odds. But remember our last blog, I only had a 2.8 GPA. And when I first started, I also didn’t know what I was doing, didn’t know what to say or how to say it. However, I can say that I was bound and determined to go to college and as a result, I figured out the winning formula in the process.

There is more than one winning formula for scholarships. You just have to take the time to learn them and make it work in your favor. The key in picking is go with what works for you.

Everyone can’t win the one $100,000 scholarships, but you can win $100,000 worth of small scholarships. So live in your truth about scholarships. Either way, $100K is $100K!

What’s your strategy to win $100K? Merit, community service, talent?
